COOK ISLANDS HEALTH EMERGENCY PLAN FORMULATED

The Cook Islands workplan for the Implementation of the International Health Regulations and Asia Pacific Strategy for Emerging Diseases 2008 - 2010 has been formulated.

A health emergency taskforce which included all relevant stakeholders within Government and NGOs met at a four day "brain storming" session at the Point Restaurant this week and was able to come up with specific objectives for the plan to ensure that the country has the minimum systems and capacities in place by 2010 for early detection of, rapid response to and effective preparedness for disease outbreaks and public health emergencies.

The Cook Islands Community Health Services Directorate and the Public Health Division under Te Marae Ora Ministry Of Health will undertake management and coordination of the workplan.

Once established this year, the role will move to the Event Surveillance and Response (ESR) unit of the Public Health Division.

Monitoring and evaluation of the workplan will be conducted to track down achievements and identify problems during the implementation while a quarterly and annual meeting of stakeholders will report on progress.

The budget for the workplan is estimated at around NZ$1 million.
