WRECKED BOAT TO BE CUT UP

Local environmentalists should rest easy now with the confirmation by Taio shipping company owner Tapi, that its grounded ship the Maungaroa at rocks in Avatiu harbour will be cut up and removed to shore to be packed up and shipped overseas for scrap.

Company workers will carry out the work.

Govmedia of the Office of the Prime Minister received the announcement today and according to Taio work will begin as soon as equipments arrive from China.

"The parts have already been ordered, but the slight delay was due to China celebrating its New Year earlier this month," Taio said.

He said that it will probably take up to a month to do the "cutting-up" work.

He also assurred that in the meantime the damaged Maungaroa is securely anchored to prevent it from moving. There were serious concerns from the general public and environmentalists that the ship posed a danger to the environment and in-coming vessels during high seas.

Taio said that remaining oil aboard the vessel has been removed and there has been regular monitoring of any movement of the wreck.
