PM to meet NZ governor-general on Manihiki

Prime Minister Dr Robert Woonton will fly to Manihiki on Monday November 24 for the visit of New Zealand Governor-General Dame Sylvia Cartwright.

The prime minister will travel on a chartered Air Rarotonga aircraft and will be accompanied by New Zealand High Commissioner, Kurt Meyer, the prime minister’s chief executive officer, Piho Rua and several police officers.

Dame Sylvia is making an 11-day state visit to the Cook Islands, Tokelau and Samoa and will arrive at Manihiki on the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate Te Mana on Tuesday November 26.

She will spend a day on Manihiki inspecting NZAid-funded projects including cyclone shelters built after Cyclone Martin devastated the island in 1997. The governor-general will be given a full traditional welcome and will meet traditional and local government leaders from Manihiki and Rakahanga.

The prime minister’s party will travel back to Rarotonga with the governor-general aboard Te Mana and Dame Sylvia will spend two days taking part in official engagements on the island before flying to New Zealand on the evening of Friday November 28.

Her programme includes a formal function at the Queen’s Representative’s residence on Thursday afternoon, followed by a State dinner at the National Auditorium in the evening. Local villages will provide the catering.

On Friday morning she will visit the Punanga Nui and the Are Pa Metua at Nikao before attending a luncheon for representatives of non-government organisations at the New Zealand High ommissioner’s Residence at Ngatipa.
