Rarotonga’s popular annual tivaevae (traditional quilt) exhibition has been brought forward to October 4 this year.
It was originally to have been held on October 14, but the dates had to be changed when the organiser went to New Zealand.
National Museum curator Ngatuaine Maui said there had been plans to scrap the show this show, but that hadn’t been possible because the event was strongly promoted by the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation.
This year’s show will now be organised by the Arorangi vainetini group and will feature about 30 tivaevae showcasing the various traditional designs (manu, ta-orei, ta-taura, paka-onu etc).
“Some will be new and some heirlooms sewn by the owners’ mothers or grandmothers will also come out of the glory boxes.
Maui says workshops will run during the exhibition and a tivaevae will be put together by a group of women to show visitors how much work is involved in creating them.
